Sponsorship Speed Dating event
Last night at UTS Women in Business Sponsorship Speed Dating event, I had a unique experience and it turned into something unexpectedly powerful.
While the event was designed for students to rotate in small groups between sponsor company tables, I somehow ended up flying solo. Instead of being intimidated by having each table’s full attention for five whole minutes, I leaned into it. I opened each chat with a smile and said, “Well, now I have you all to myself!” From there, meaningful, personal conversations unfolded.
As a first-year student still exploring my path, I wasn’t trying to impress anyone. I was simply there to connect. That gave me space to be relaxed, honest, and curious. I shared my background, my journey so far, and my evolving goals. I was met with genuine curiosity and encouragement from everyone I spoke to.
I also chose to be open about my autism and what that means for me in the workplace. I asked each company how they support neurodivergent employees. I was encouraged to hear consistent commitments to inclusion, flexibility, and case-by-case support. Many reps admitted they are still in the early stages of learning about neurodiversity, and that honesty was refreshing. It reinforced something I’ve been realising lately — that I might have a future not just in business, but also as someone who advocates for inclusion and understanding.
When it came time to connect on LinkedIn, I skipped the QR code trend and handed out business cards instead. A little old-school, but it sparked some genuine moments and more than a few surprised smiles.
A big thank you to the Women in Business team for creating such a supportive, engaging space — and to every sponsor representative who took the time to listen and share advice.
This experience reminded me that the best career journeys often begin with honest conversations. I'm looking forward to more of them.
